American Fiction

Watched this movie last night. Leslie Uggams as the dementia mom really hit home. Watching the struggles of the children in how they handled her challenges gave me some things I could relate to. The surprise they had when their mom turned to some violence when confused was the same for me.

The story revolving around race relations was done well. The insanity behind white-guilt and how it drives narratives in the states was highlighted well in the film. It sucks when tropes and memes turn peceptions into apocalyptic visions of what it means to be black in America. Not every black person was in a gang or faced insane violence in their home. Applying a single narrative to everyone is folly.

In other news... Today was Pi Day. March 14. Yippee. I wonder just how rare I am as a math teacher that doesn't look forward to Pi Day. It's lame. Why? Because Pi is lame. Tau is sooooo much better. This video gives the rationale better than I could.

Added bonus. Tau day is June 28. My birthday is June 29. Noice.

Not sure if I'll be able to sleep tonight. If I do I'm hoping to wake up to a message that mom has been accepted into a new home down in the Tacoma area. When I told her that she might be able to live closer to her sisters she responded with "That would be heavenly". Not convenient, but it's what she wants more than anything else now. It's been a rough month. I feel like life owes her this one. If not Tacoma then Oak Harbor feels good too. She connected with the administrator from that place with some singing and dancing. Regardless, we're going to take some steps forward tomorrow. Better days are near.

Thanks for the kind thought. It's appreciated.

I understand why the Pi works well in complex numbers, but Tau also works there too. Instead e to the i Pi being equal to -1 you should try e to the i Tau and see what you get. :)

Glad you saw American Fiction. It was one of my favorites of the past year. Superbly crafted film with wonderful minor characters. Excellent message delivered with some humor.

So you got me watching Vi videos again and she has a brand new one where she suggests that if you are going to celebrate Pi Day with circular foods, and you wish to be mathematically correct, you should really be celebrating with half circle foods. Like tacos.

🤣🤣🤣

She's a rockstar. Tacos rule.

In a city of more than 10 million I'm struggling to find good Mexican food. Yeah, go to China and look for Mexican food? Umm. Okay. Taking some friends out to dinner Sunday and got a recommendation. Wish me luck.

Well, there's me too. I gave my kids the same take. Love Vi's videos.

Plus if you celebrate Tau day you don't have to do anything with your students, cause it's at the end of June. 😁
