Dogs playing poker

Updated: Mar 10, 2023

Hosted the regular game last night and we had a special start guest appearance from Monte, Gillian and Zach's English bulldog. I immediately thought of Brian's favorite piece of artwork, Dogs playing poker. If I had more time I think we could have set this picture up much better by attaching an ace to Monte's foot and having him pass it under the table to me.

Last night was a mild crowd in terms of rowdiness. It's always easy to judge the previous night based on this. Oh wait, this is the left over after the box was emptied the first time earlier in the night. A significant amount of beer gets downed each poker night, and none of it is me because I'm the one dealing all night.

I've had a crazy busy week. Trying to get ready for next week ahead of time while simultaneously feeling like I'm swamped this week has been a rough formula. Glad to say I see some relief in the coming weeks due to mock exams. Our 12th grade students face an enormous battery of exams before they graduate. To prepare for this onslaught of tests they get to experience "mock exams". They get practice tests that take two weeks. I was responsible for prepping their math exam. It's three separate tests (just math) that take five hours. They have many other tests in other subjects during this two week period too. During the two weeks they won't be coming to class, which means I'lll pick up an extra five blocks of prep time during the two weeks stretch. Bye seniors. I'll see you again in April.

Next week I'll be taking six students to Huizhou (near Hong Kong) for the ACAMIS golf tournament. Excited to get to hang out with some kids that are avid golfers and I get to play a couple of rounds too. We had a quick meeting yesterday during break, but two of the boys weren't there. I'll track them down on Monday just to introduce myself. We leave very early Tuesday and return Thursday night. I've saved a bunch of testing for my classes to take while I'm gone, but there are a couple activities I have to set up for a sub. Planning for someone else to show up and do your job is a norm for teachers. I wonder, how many other professions do this?

Ivy has been gone for three weeks traveling for her job. She works for a company that sells chemicals to drug manufacturing companies all across Asia. I think they mostly create antibiotics. She was in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Tibet. We're planning to get together next weekend on Friday and Saturday. Looking forward to seeing her again. I'm hoping the weather holds up here for another week. The past two days have been just over 80 degrees. I've got my eyes on the large hill that I see off my balcony every day. There's a trail that runs along the ridge. Thinking that a trip to the top with Ivy next weekend sounds like a plan.

Planning on spending a bunch of time in my classroom this weekend. I've got tests to grade. Tests to write. And comments. Comments? Yeah, comments. The staff dreads having to write comments. They're long detailed reports about how the kids are doing in classes. The weird thing this round is that we're writing these reports for students in our advisory class. Most teachers that have kids in their advisory also have them in their regular classes. I don't. None of them. I have to write comments about kids I barely know. I think I have enough materials to cobble some paragraphs together, but it's going to be a challenge. Other than that I'll be spending some time watching the Big 12 basketball tournament. Rock Chalk Jayhawk. Can Kansas win back to back championships? I'd like to see that.

I am trying to read all your posts, doing ok-ish last few weeks. I am vicariously living through your experiences. I have so many questions to ask you... #1) Can you play in the 2023 NCAA Pool? And will it put me on some sort of secret american subversive list?.....LOL!!! Rock Chalk Jay Hawks...

Bro, I'm in, but after watching my Jayhawks lose to Texas for the second time in a week I'm feeling a bit sketchy about putting them down to win it all. What am I saying? Regardless, I'm in. Just hit me with an email.

Sent you the link for the bracket. Hope it’s a functioning email. If not, let me know how to send it your way because you are filling one out.

Emails well received. Not sure who I will pick as my winner this year. I hear those Jayhawks from KU are pretty good. Will be curious to see how they look against Texas tomorrow in the Big 12 title game. Self's 20 year stretch at KU is just ridiculous. Not in the Wooden realm (who else is?), but certainly one of the best 20 year eras of all time.
