Food delivery

To buy groceries and prepare meals in my apartment would cost more than having restaurant meals delivered to campus. I kid you not.

I have a kitchen area with cupboards, a sink, a fridge, a microwave, and a stove top. No oven though.

I have yet to turn the stove top on. I've heated up some left overs in the microwave, but that's about it. Whenever I plan to eat I use one of a couple different apps to have food delivered to campus. It's super convenient and cheap. I also have beverages and fruit delivered from a grocery store nearby which is also much simpler than it sounds.

My go to for beverages and fruit is WuMart. It's only a few kilometers away and they get here within an hour. Lately I've been getting apples, kiwis, and grapes. I just go with what they have that appears to be in season. I continue to be surprised at how fresh and crisp all of it is. I tend to have a large apple or a couple of kiwis every morning for breakfast. Wumart is a fairly large store. I could order everything from potato chips to toilet paper to towels to steaks. They have a wide variety of products and they deliver anything.

Here's what the process looks like on my end. Step one is to open up an app. For WuMart I tend to use Meituan. Folks around here call in the kangaroo app. The icon that shows up when it's being delivered looks like a small kangaroo. Here's what Meituan looks like when I first open it. The blue circle is the grocery stuff.

After choosing groceries I navigate to Wumart and start selecting items I want. There are tons of other stores I could choose from. The left side menu describes departments. When I see what I want I add it to my cart with the small + symbol. Eventually I get a cart full of stuff I want and check out.

Yes, they deliver beer and wine too. No ID check required. In the states I'm sure people would object to kids getting access to it, but it's no big deal here. It's not a problem. So that you can compare prices 1$ USD right now is about $7 RMB. That's 12 bottles of lemonade, a bottle of wine, and some assorted fruit for just over $20. Not bad.

Ordered meals from restaurants looks the same. I generally use the Alipay app for that.

Once the delivery is on the way I can follow the delivery driver using the apps. It looks like this. I'm the small pink candy corn. The driver? You get it.

Dude is almost here. I have to run down to the east gate to grab my dinner. It takes me only a few minutes riding my bike.

This is amazing. I see Taco Bros and something that looks Italian. What an experience and good for you for navigating with pictures (and some language, of course)… and no car involved!

Taco Bros is good stuff. Their fajita salad is solid. I wish they put more cheese in their quesadilla, but overall I'm very happy with them.

For the meals, can you get them from a variety of places or are your options limited? Also, is there any other food options besides Chinese?

Definitely the variations of rice. Most of it fried in some fashion. Surprising, but rarelybdoes it have any egg in it. Also enjoying the sushi quite a bit. There are lots of Japanese restaurants around. Odd that I had to head to the other side of the planet for this, but I’m finding a renewed appreciation for fruit. Apples, pears, grapes, etc.
