Home cooking

I had my Ayi start preparing me some meals last month. It’s been a good decision. I’ve been looking forward to arriving at home after work in both Mondays and Tuesdays to see what she has made for me. She was already doing this for my neighbors and colleagues the Kushner’s, it was an easy change for her. She’s doubling the output and giving me half.

Pasta in olive oil. Homemade sausage. Thin chicken nuggets that are lightly fried. And then something that I don’t know what to call. The small wedges on the right are sort of like cheese with nuts and seeds in them. They sit in a balsamic sauce. Good stuff. Matt tells me they are called tempe(?). A common protein substitute for vegetarians? What’s pictured here is exactly half of what she leaves me. It ends up being two days worth of meals for me. It’s been a good choice. I’ll try to remember to grab some more pictures in the coming weeks.

May 1st looms for my mom, but of course she’s oblivious. It’s the day that she needs to be officially on Medicaid. I’ve sent a few emails and left voicemails with the DSHS agent, but haven’t heard back in more than a week. Nervous is a wild understatement. Making things worse, what happens if they say no? I have no idea. Seriously. She would have nowhere to go. I can’t fathom what would happen next for her. Trying to be optimistic, but being in a sort of limbo on this isn’t good. The stress of having incomplete tasks doesn’t sit well with me.

Things are ramping up for me as the 10th grade level leader. China Trips is a big event each year. Last year I was in charge for our 9th grade trip to Yunnan. This year we’re headed north to Inner Mongolia. Dessert. Grasslands. Camels. Yurts. Campfires. Clear nights for stargazing. Looking forward to this trip. Should be a good time. A bit chaotic at the moment collecting information from individual students. Passports, green cards, and PRC card information is the order of the day. You can’t go anywhere in China without proper identification. Seriously. Going to a professional basketball game last week I needed my passport as identification to get in. Hotels. Museums. Trains. All necessary. Doing the legwork ahead of time in providing identification information for the hotels will be a huge time saver when we arrive. Getting sixty people checked into a hotel one pair at a time takes forever if I don’t get everything to the hotels ahead of time.

Last note of the day. Getting a slight head cold. Typical for me. Weather improves and here comes the snot. Yippee. Glad to report that it’s not Aiyun too. Just me. Also, she was optimistic last night that her back is improving.
