Street food

There are food carts all over every Chinese city selling street food. All sorts of stuff. I haven’t taken advantage of it other than a few times. I’ve frequented the roadside fruit carts more often than the meat on a stick thing.

Tonight my buddy Matt the economist took me to some local street food here in Hangzhou. It was a venue with hundreds of small shops. Completely reminded me of the hawker centers in Singapore. Just about every Chinese food you could think of.

When he said “best lamb” I was in. He tells me the Uyghurs from northwest China make the best lamb and they have a small place amongst these shops. We settled on several items and then found a table. Lamb, squid, fish balls, bread, fried banana, and something called stinky tofu. He’s been in China for a lot of years. I don’t think I’ve been here long enough to try that.

There were several small areas that felt like side streets of the complex. This video gives you a feel for the main center area.

Ended up eating way too much. Finished off my meal with some Tanghulu. Strawberries coated in a sugar glaze. Love it. Another great eating experience. Looking forward to repeating this night again before I head home.

Update: Name of this area is called Laxijie. Literal translation is “Garbage Street”. Love it.
