The journey home

Up and out the door at 5:00am. It's going to be a long 24 hours. I hired a car to take me to Pudong Airport in Shanghai. It's about a two hour drive. I considered a hotel next to the airport, but the gal I hired the car through convinced me that was a waste of money. She was right.

A two hour flight to Korea and then a bit of a layover before a 10 hour flight to Seattle. I downloaded a series from HBO to watch. I hope I can sleep on the plane some, but that never really works for me.

Now in Korea on my layover. I assumed I would be able to get my hands on some way to pay for a meal while I waited a couple hours for my flight to Seattle. No dice. My Alipay on my phone didn't work and there's no cash machine anywhere inside the airport. Further, both my credit cards expired at the end of June. I figured I could survive three days without them. I thought wrong. Not a big deal. I had an apple this morning and they served a small lunch on the plane. There's a meal being served on the flight to Seattle so I'll survive, and missing a meal wouldn't hurt my waistline.

Speaking of weight... mine has steadily gone up this school year. I was down to just under 220 lbs at the start of the school year and I was getting plenty of exercise. The thing that really hurt was when I damaged my Achilles tendon. It was at least three months before I felt right again. And as the spring hit and I started golfing and I wasn't getting the walk in like I wanted. It was alway in a cart. Now I'm tilting 240 lbs. Not good. Further, I've learned how to get whatever food I want, and I've been making bad choices there. When the new school year starts I'll be getting back on the basketball court. Speaking of which, I'll be coaching basketball again next year. My athletic director has guaranteed me that I won't have to be the head coach, but I'll be depended on for Xs and Os. Sounds good to me. I'm a tachtician, not a motivator. Everyone here plays a 2-3 defense. I've got a great offense that attacks the 2-3. Looking forward to implementing that.

Landed in Seattle and I'm waiting on my luggage. Mike is in the cell lot waiting for me. That was a brutal 10 hour flight. My neck is killing me and I developed a head cold. Having to blow my nose on an airplane makes me feel all kinds of wrong. I might have slept a total of an hour. After only three hours yesterday I'm super tired. Met a nice lady (Veda) and her son that teach in a Shanghai international school. We were on the same flight to Korea sharing a row together and chatted a bit. She and her husband both work at Western International School or Shanghai. Her son Ivan doesn't like math and likes to play games. Veda was telling me that Ivan might be better suited to attend school here in the states. They are having a tough time deciding where to live and work.

Got picked up and we're headed to the Train Wreck in Burlington for dinner. And then? Sleep. Blissful sleep.
