West Lake Exploration

West Lake is a World Heritage site. It’s quite literally on the west side of Hangzhou. It’s sandwiches between the city and some big hills (mountains). The lake has 1000s of years of history and was a major reason that Hangzhou appealed to me. This graphic shows all the places to visit around the lake. There are seven “stories” about various parts of the lake. Learning them all and visiting each part will take time. This picture is rotated 90 degrees. North is to the right. I'm currently living to the south of it (just off the picture in the upper left) across the old #1 Quiantang Bridge.

Up and out the door super early around 5:45 am before the heat kicks in. The plan is to bike to West Lake and round the lake on my new bike. Should be about 20 miles total. Thinking I should be able to easily make it around in under two hours with some electric assistance. I’m the blue dot at the bottom of this pic. Going to take the yellow path up and around. Pics of my adventure to follow.

22.2 miles in about 2 hours. I stopped a lot to try and log some photographs. The Lake is spectacular and I know the picture gallery here won’t do it justice. I don’t really have the “eye” for photography, but I gave it my best effort.

Tomorrow headed out on a field trip to where else but West Lake. Difference this time is meeting up with some HIS staff at a subway station and then using some trains. They have a huge network of subway stations all around the city.

Planning a few more bike rides. Might try to make it down to the new campus tomorrow morning. Also got an invite on Sunday night for another bike ride. No idea where, but I’ll tag along. This WeChat account hint is big here. Super easy to create new groups and get tons of invites and messages from the staff. WeChat is texting, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat all in one place. Oh yeah, and banking and shopping too. It’s seriously all in one app.

Nice pics dude! A tip, unless there is an absolute reason to put the subject of the photo in the center-don't. Put it off center - think of tic tac toe grid and put the subject on one of the verticals... you can take the kid out of yb but you can't take yb out of the kid :D

That place is beautiful... and I can almost sense the impending heat from those pics.

Lucky you on the showers. I'm having my bathroom renovated and been showering in a "privacy shelter" in the back yard using a Coleman shower bag. They finished the bathroom yesterday and I realized I never ordered a new shower curtain for the clawfoot freestanding tub. So another couple days in the back yard waving at the neighbors. 🙂

Enjoying your posts as I catch up with your adventures (I forgot to look over the summer). Just out of curiosity, any chance that your blog software supports a "Next post" button so I don't have to keep going back to the main page and scrolling down to find the next?

The lake looks stunning!

I've read a little about Wechat. It seems that it is also monitored by the Chinese government and is how they track political discussions, dissent, etc. Have you heard much about that?

I've been told that WeChat is monitored by the government. Who knows how much of that is actual versus perceived? However, I've been instructed by several not to criticize the government on WeChat or in my classroom. I don't think that'll be a problem. I'm not going to be leading any revolutions.
